This is a very oddly conceived story. The heroine is a rather sad and lonely character. Weirdly, she is employed as a chemist in a lab that does drug urine analysis, but is also apparently employed as an "on-call" undercover agent for some secret government agency that looks into illegal activity. She appears to have absolutely no qualifications or training to do this, other than she has no family and spent a few years working in the peace corp. Nor is she particularly clever or skilled -- as evidenced by a weird little subplot that has no real relevance to the main story, where she is called in by her boss at her lab job and asked for ideas on how they can discover which employee is stealing items from their lab. Our heroine (Katherine) has no good ideas to offer, but weeks later, finally suggests matching which employees were working on the days when the thefts happened. Any halfwit would have come up with that idea in 2 seconds. So it doesn't speak highly of Katherine's investigative skills. . Another oddity, our heroine doesn't own a computer. The story is set in 1995, but I had a laptop, internet, and used email at that time. Again, she's an investigative agent... I'm just saying....Anyway, on occasion our heroine, Katherine, is called away from her lab duties to meet with a stern woman from "the agency" who gives her an assignment. Because Katherine resembles the ex-lover of a famous opera singer (Ariana) whom "the agency" suspects is a terrorist, Katherine is assigned to meet the opera singer and get involved with her. After she's given this assignment, there seems to be no big rush to get cracking on it, as Katherine returns to work in the lab as usual and we're then taken through several meandering tangential day to day stuff with Katherine, that leaves you wondering where any of this is going and what it has to do with the main plot. Finally, over 1/3 into the book, Katherine meets Ariana. Ariana is instantly taken with Katherine, which is a little hard to buy as Katherine's not particularly funny or a scintillating conversationalist. I guess the resemblance to the ex-lover thing is powerful enough. They meet for lunch a couple times and engage in bland dialog including the weather. After more dinner dates with lackluster dialog, Katherine asks Ariana to travel with her to Paris as her companion (platonic at this point) while she is there performing in an Opera. Honestly, I just kept waiting for something dynamic to happen. A romance evolves but slowly and not in a very exciting way. And again, the author often took meandering detours including scenes between Katherine and peripheral characters that have no ties to the main plot or really have much to do about anything. It was just odd! Finally some stuff does happen. But it all turns out to be pretty lame and during the climatic scenes with the villain the dialog is dreadful.
To sum it up: Weak plotting and dialog. Lack of chemistry and romance between the heroine and the opera singer. Ariana lacked character development and a distinct personality. Actually, most of the characters lacked layers and humor. The story needed to be fleshed out and thought through more.
